March 29, downtown Miami will lose it’s glow for an hour along with other cities around the globe for ‘Earth Hour.’ The event is intended to raise awareness about energy conservation and global warming. According to the Herald report, tens of thousands of businesses, schools and individuals, will turn off nonessential lights in a wave rolling west across time zones from Christchurch, New Zealand, to Honolulu.
In Miami, the shining Bank of America building — a signature skyscraper often bathed in colorful floodlights — will blink off.
Streets won’t suddenly plunge into blackness; traffic signals, street lamps and other public safety lighting will remain burning.
But Mayor Manny Diaz hopes enough downtown building owners will cooperate to send the message that it’s a good idea to, at the very least, routinely flick off light switches. ”The big picture is about creating a consciousness,” Diaz said. “Do we really need to have every single light on in our homes every night?”
As we get closer, I will identify what time this will occur - and perhaps even each of you can participate in this global event. Plus, it will save an untold amount of electricity, coal and oil - and save tons of carbon from entering our atmosphere.
